Six Fir Oil Gifts and Who Each One Suits

A handmade gift lands in someone else's home, so the best one is chosen for the person and not only for the recipe. A fir lotion bar is a delight for someone who loves a woodsy scent. A fir wax melt, lovely as it is, needs a household without a curious cat. Here are six ideas, and who each one suits.

Think about the home first

Two quick questions narrow the list. Is there a bird, a cat or another pet at home? Is there anyone who finds fragranced air difficult? If so, lean toward gifts that are used on the hands or kept in a drawer, and away from ones that release scent into the room. The ASPCA suggests avoiding diffusers around birds and avoiding applying essential oils to a pet. If you are unsure, the recipient's veterinarian can advise.

Six gifts and who they suit

1. A lotion bar, for the person who loves hand care. A 30 g bar at 1% needs 0.3 g of fir oil, about six drops. That sits inside our 0.5% to 2% dilution guidance and the 1% to 3% body range from the Tisserand Institute. Make it with a nut-free liquid oil, since you will not know the recipient's allergies. The method is in our lotion bar post.

2. Melt-and-pour soap, for almost anyone. At 1% of a 100 g bar, you need 1 g of fir oil. That is below the 2% to 4% wash-off range the Tisserand Institute gives, so it is a gentle start. The soap post explains the base and the temperature. If you plan to sell soap, not just give it, the FDA says a product meant to moisturise or make the user smell nice is a cosmetic, which changes its labelling.

3. A room spray, for a home without pets or fragrance-sensitive guests. A 2 oz bottle takes roughly 15 drops of fir, as worked out in our room spray post.

4. Wax melts, for someone with a warmer and no pets in the room. They scent a room generously and the recipe is in our wax melts guide. Wrap them with a note that the warmer is best used in a room the pets do not visit.

5. Shower steamers, for the person who loves a bath-time treat. At 1% of the mix, one 25 g tablet carries about 0.25 g, around five drops. Because steam carries scent right to the face, they suit someone who enjoys fragrance rather than someone who is sensitive to it; the steamer post has the details.

6. A felt or clay ornament, for the tree itself. A few drops on a plain felt or unglazed clay ornament gives a small, slow scent beside the branches. The oil is undiluted on the surface, so it suits a spot out of reach of small hands and pets, and away from wood finishes. We would start with three to five drops and refresh as needed.

Give it a proper label

The FDA's labelling summary for retail cosmetics asks for an ingredient list in descending order (ingredients at 1% or less can follow in any order), the name and place of business of the maker, and the net quantity. A gift is not a sale, but meeting that standard takes one small label, so we would do it anyway: list the ingredients, name "fir needle essential oil", add your name and the date, and add a note to patch test first and keep it from eyes, children and pets. Our oil is for external, cosmetic use and is not for internal use.

The oils that go in each gift, other than the fir, come from a craft or supply shop. We sell only the fir needle oil.

Pick the gift that matches the home it is going to, wrap it with a label, and you have a present people can enjoy without a second thought.
